Who should City Council Appoint?

City Council must appoint someone to fill out the remainder of the term for the seat being vacated by Alvin Nash. I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions... any feedback, positive or negative, is welcome and appreciated.

Who should serve until July 2010??

If I wasn't already backing Rupert:

My next choice would be Beth Deel of The Water Heater, myscoper.com, and upupperiscope.com.

She is the sort of creative genius we need to enhance the quality of life in the Star City.

Everyone knows and respects Beth Deel.

Once Rupert does his duty, I'm going to start the Draft Deel 2010 movement, FYI.

I agree with Hank that Beth Deel would be an interesting choice.

There has been a lot of talk about the need to appoint someone with prior experience to the post. I personally believe this would be a huge mistake. You had no prior experience, and I believe your willingness to question past practices has made you more effective.

A vision for the city and a willingness to take a stand are more important than intimate knowledge of the inner workings of the council. We need to look to the future instead of clinging to the past. The people who are already familiar with the way things work are more likely to be part of the problem than the solution.

While I agree with you in principal, Chris, there is nothing "in the past" about Rupert Cutler . . . he is probably the most progressive public servant in the Valley.

Besides the verdict is still out on Rosen . . . yeah, the real estate tax reductions for elderly and the disabled on fixed incomes was a genuine sign of leadership, but let's see what else he's got before we brand him the golden child.

Bring Linda Wyatt back -- we need her common sense and compassion for the little guy.

Are there any Republicans in Roanoke?

The GOP is growing quickly in Roanoke City and will have a strong presence in all future elections. We have some great talent but given the make up of the Council there is no way to get a Republican appointed. The GOP in the city is run by Adam Boitnott who is dramtically changing the face of the party.

I like a lot of your suggestions. Good points on experience vs. potential.

Please keep the comments coming.

Rupert huh? Are we still trying to get a freakin restaurant on Mill Mountain? How about we all coerce Stuart Mease to run? Out with old Roanoke. Let's get some fresh prespective in there outside of good ole Court.

Wade Whitehead makes lots of sense.

Now that Cutler is in, how about drafting James Settle for the next spot?
